Education paths leading to professional caregiving in Slovenia

To implement social welfare services at home (in a formal way), persons need appropriate education. This can be a completed secondary vocational or professional school in nursing or social care (level IV EQF).

If persons do not have such education, another possibility is a professional qualification that can be obtained within the framework of the certification system. Based on a knowledge test, which includes theoretical and practical tests of competence to perform help at home, the worker receives a publicly valid document – a certificate, which confirms the competence to perform the profession of career. Special conditions (according to  Rules on the standards and norms for social services) for qualification include at least primary education (level 2 EQF) and at least 5 years of experience in the field of working with people or at least 1 year of experience in the field of social care for the elderly, disabled, etc. of persons with special needs, which the candidate proves with certificates, references, statements and at least 21 years of age and completed a verified training program in social care in the field of social care. The training lasts 150 teaching hours (NPK, 2022).

Recognition of education for purpose of work

Recognition of education is initiated by a request that foreigners submit to the ENIC-NARIC centre of Slovenia.

Recognition for the purpose of continuing education in the Republic of Slovenia

This procedure recognises a foreign document holder’s right to continue education in the Republic of Slovenia. The procedure is initiated upon your request lodged on a prescribed form with the education institution in the Republic of Slovenia where you intend to continue your education.

Language requirements: foreigners need to have a good command of Slovenian language.

The free-of-charge program Initial integration of immigrants – ZIP is implemented for foreigners, citizens of third countries, to whom the competent administrative unit has issued a certificate of fulfilling the conditions for participation in such programme. It is carried out in the scope of up to 180 hours of Slovenian; included is learning of language on level A1 (basic level).

There are no specific trainings for persons who come from particular countries to Slovenia.

Salaries for caregivers (with 10 years of work experience) – 1075 € gross amount

Salaries of caregivers-nurses are higher:

Caregiver- nurse beginner: 1117 € gross amount

Caregiver- nurse with 32 years of work experience: 1887 € gross amount (Cekin, 2020)
