Education paths leading to professional caregiving in Spain

Besides family members, non-formal caregiving is often offered by immigrants (many of them undergo informal training in caregiving). Also, Spain utilises the ECVC “Elderly Care Vocational Certificate, ” an e-training programme for formal or informal caregivers. The programme is based on the pre-existing e-learning curriculum developed by the LdV ECV project (www.ecvleonardo.com in 2005- 2007) and is supplemented with work experience at elderly care providers (EC, 2018). Upon conclusion of training, participants do not receive level of education, but qualification.

Formal caregivers in Spain have at least secondary school (53%); this is followed by 34% who have a college diploma or something similar (Font et all, 2022 , p.19)

Information on earning

The average pay for a Caregiver working in Spain is €22,501 a year of gross amount (ERIERI, 2023). Typical earning will be around 18,280  € net amount per year, and this can range from the lowest average salary of about 8,560 € net amount to the highest average salary of 28,860 € net amount.

In the period 2013-2060, the share of people aged 80+ in the Spanish population is expected to grow from 5.5% to 14.9% (EU-28: 5.1%-11.8%).

The care model in Spain is principally familialistic, with informal care tradition. Most caregivers are family members of elderly person receiving help. Spain has one of the highest prevalence of informal carers (15.3% of the population or more than 7 million people). Around 81% of people helping individuals over age 65 are informal caregivers (Eurocarers, 2023).
