Note: Malta qualification framework (MQF) is based on 8 levels, as is the European Qualification Framework (EQF).
A programme of 8 to 15 months is offered to work as caregivers formally. Entry requirements are a pass in English Language and Mathematics, OR a MQF/EQF Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (or equivalent). After completing the programme, the Elderly care certificate is issued at level 4 of the MQF/EQF. See Certificate in Elderly Care | IDEA Academy (ideaeducation.com) (iAcademy, 2022).
Also, validation of informal and non-formal learning for Care Workers is possible at Level 4 of the MQF/EQF. The prospective candidate must have 3 years of experience in the respective field. This is in line with national law, S.L. 327.432 of 2012; which regulates the Validation of Informal and Non-formal Learning (Jobsplus, 2022).
Most caregivers have completed secondary school (96%), only 4% less than secondary school (ERIERI, 2023).

Some statistic data
Malta has a mixed system of care, involving state, church and private institutions. Staying at their home and thus remaining in the community is the preferred option among Maltese seniors. The state promotes support for caring for seniors at home through several services and financial mechanisms for family members. The state also covers the cost of an outsider recruited for this purpose on a full-time or part-time basis.
In particular, Filipino caregivers are employed under private regular work contracts. Malta – Eurocarers (EURO CARERS, 2023).
