Education paths leading to professional caregiving in Romania

Training of careers is delivered from the public or private spheres (in this case, mostly by NGOs). The training courses have a variable length, from a few hours. The courses that have accreditation recognised by the National Qualifications Authority are from a length of 360 hours (120 hours of theory and 240 hours of practice). Training courses are developed in modules or topics. The conditions for enrollment are that participants have at least primary education: 8 years; level 2 EQF. Nurses can act in this sector health and social mix, but there is a lack of information regarding the work of the nursing for home care.

Some caregivers may also choose to pursue further education and training to become a registered nurse, which can lead to higher-paying and more advanced roles such as a case manager or nursing supervisor. (CARESS, 2016, p. 104).

Recognition is the official acknowledgement of the authenticity of a diploma or other document issued by an education institution accredited in the country of issue. For recognition, the educational qualification is evaluated by comparison with the Romanian education system, to establish the level the document in question corresponds to in the Romanian education.

If the Romanian state accepts the diploma/degree or certificate as authentic, then you will be able to carry on your education in Romania or to get employment according to your level of education.

In Romania, the main types of social services addressed to older persons provided by both public and private social service providers (associations, foundations) are the following: temporary or permanent home care, temporary or permanent care in a home for the elderly, care in day centres, clubs for the elderly, temporary care homes, apartments, and social housing.

Caregiving in Romania is mostly informal, with many people paying family members/relatives or hiring careers informally.

About 20 000 older individuals used long-term institutional –caregiving assistance (care homes, recovery centres, public hostels for elderly..)  in 2016, both public and private (WHO, 2020, pp.10-17)

Most formal caregivers are employed in care homes and adult daycare centers (Job and salary abroad, 2023).
